Smith, Ruth Elizabeth (Norman) - It is with extreme
sadness that the family of Ruth Smith announces her passing
away peacefully on Thursday July 29th at the Soldiers
Memorial Hospital in Orillia. Beloved wife of Stan Smith of
Beaverton. Loving mother of Pat Smith of Beaverton and Brian
& Sherrie Smith of Burlington. Beloved grandmother of Gavin
and Carlie Smith of Burlington. Survived by siblings Helen
(Jerry) Foster, Minerva (Paul) O'Halloran, Bob (Mona)
Norman, Jack (Helen) Norman. Ruth was born on August 10,
1927 to Hilda and Lance Norman of Widdifield ON. Ruth and
Stan were married for 65 wonderful years. They met in war
time, and were married in 1945.
The following appeared in the column Chit Chat from the
North Bay Nugget in 1945:
“An event of international interest happened quite recently
in this very city. Great Britain and Canada were the
countries involved when Flt Sgt. Stan Smith presented Miss
Ruth Norman, who is well known in North Bay, with a lovely
engagement ring. Ruth is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.
Norman of Widdifield Township and Flt. Sgt. Smith who is
stationed with the R.A.F. Transport Command at the North Bay
airport, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith of Hendon,
Middlesex, England. The newly engaged couple has made no
definite wedding plans because Flt. Sgt. Smith expects to
return to his home in England in the near future. Their many
North Bay friends and acquaintances join us in
congratulating the happy pair.”
From the ‘50s to the ‘90s Ruth and Stan settled in Sudbury,
raising a family and participating in numerous activities.
Ruth particularly enjoyed quilting at the Church of the
Resurrection, playing bridge, bowling, cross country skiing,
golf and square dancing. In the ‘90s Ruth and Stan moved to
Beaverton ON to be closer to their children and
grandchildren. Ruth continued her many activities in
Beaverton until she suffered a stroke in the late ‘90s. Even
at this point Ruth learned to use her right hand, and
amazingly re-learned and continued to knit and participate
in other activities; she was an inspiration to all who knew
her.
As per her request, her body will be cremated, and memorials
will be held in Beaverton August 4, 1:00 pm at St Paul's
Anglican Church, 383 Osborne St (arrangements entrusted to
Mangan Funeral Home), and in Sudbury at Jackson and
Barnard's Funeral Chapel, 233 Larch St., 11:00 am Saturday
August 7 (arrangements entrusted to Jackson and Barnard).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Wilkinson, Jack Edward – (retired Captain of the Toronto
Fire Department, formerly North York FD). Jack passed away
suddenly at his home in Wilfrid, Ontario on September 16,
2009. He was 63 years of age. Jack grew up on Holly Street
in Toronto and later Empress Avenue in Willowdale and
enjoyed many summers at the cottage on Wagner’s Lake. Jack
and Faye Wilkinson (nee Weenk) were married on July 10, 1971
and moved to a hobby farm in Wilfrid. There they were
fortunate to have two daughters, Lisa and Carrie. The
Wilkinsons were a close-knit family, spending many holidays
and celebrations together.
As a dedicated and skilled firefighter, Jack was proud of
his over thirty years of service. After he retired, while
waiting for Faye to do the same, he was known to spend many
enjoyable hours visiting friends in Wilfrid and Pefferlaw
with his little blue cooler and duffle bag, the unofficial
“mayor” of Wilfrid. Throughout his life, Jack spent his time
playing old timer hockey in Cannington, ice fishing on Lake
Simcoe, baseball with the Keswick Krunch, hunting and
fishing trips to the Hunt Club in Madoc, and boating. In
recent years, he and Faye enjoyed RVing with his brother Bob
and wife Leslie and annual vacations to southern climates.
Always the proud father, Jack was so happy in October 2006
to enjoy the marriage of his elder daughter Lisa to Daniel
Foisy, followed by the birth of his grandson Brayden 10
months ago. Most recently he was thrilled by the engagement
of his younger daughter Carrie to John Bell and the planning
of the upcoming wedding. Jack was pre-deceased by his
parents, Albert and Mary. Jack spent years caring for his
mother, when she moved to Rixon Manor in Pefferlaw. Jack is
survived by Faye, Lisa, and Carrie, his brother Bob and
their families. On September 19, 2009, Jack’s wish for his
family and friends to celebrate his life at a party at his
home was fulfilled. A private family internment at Hart
Cemetery in Wilfrid occurred on September 22, 2009. He will
be remembered for his sense of humour, his generous nature,
and his love for family and friends. We will miss him.

year. Geoffrey, beloved husband of Mary Isabella Bagshaw
Parke-Taylor, for 63 years. Loved father of Janet Bowyer and
of Michael Parke-Taylor and his wife Barbara Butts. Lovingly
remembered by grandson The Rev. Daniel Bowyer and his wife
Sarah Franklin. The Right Reverend Geoffrey Parke-Taylor was
consecrated as Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Huron in
the Anglican Church of Canada in 1976. In 1981, he was
elected Bishop Suffragan in the Diocese of Toronto serving
as Area Bishop in The Highlands until his retirement in
1985. Born in Denham (Buckinghamshire) England in 1920,
Geoffrey came to Canada in 1932. He graduated from St.
John's High School in New Brunswick at the age of 14 and
studied at Wycliffe College in Toronto receiving an honours
B.A. in Oriental languages (now Near Eastern Studies). He
received a Masters in Oriental languages from the University
of Toronto where he pursued doctoral studies, played soccer
and was part of the university's track team. According to
Reginald Stackhouse (The Way Forward: A History of Wycliffe
College, Toronto, 1877-2002 [Toronto: University of Toronto
Press, 2002]), Geoffrey Parke-Taylor was considered "someone
too good to lose, a man whose place in the classroom must
quickly change from student desk to professor's lectern."
From 1944-1951, he taught at Wycliffe College, where he was
Professor of Old Testament. Geoffrey pursued his calling as
a parish priest in the 1950s, first as Incumbent at the
Parish of Fenelon Falls and Coboconk (1951-53) and then at
St. Andrew's, Thistletown and St. Paul's, Rexdale (1953-55).
After serving as Incumbent at St. Elizabeth's, the Queensway
in Toronto from 1955-1959, he returned to teaching. He was
Professor of New Testament at the Anglican Theological
College in Vancouver (1959-1964) and Professor of Old
Testament and Hebrew at Huron College, London, Ontario
(1964-1976), serving as Dean of Theology from 1966-1976. He
earned his Doctorate of Divinity from Wycliffe College and
was awarded honorary doctorates from Trinity College and
Huron College. Geoffrey Parke-Taylor published two books:
Yahweh: The Divine Name in The Bible (Wilfrid Laurier
University Press, 1975) and The Formation of the Book of
Jeremiah: Doublets and Recurring Phrases (Society of
Biblical Literature Monograph Series, 2000). The latter
received the R.B.Y. Scott Award in 2001 from the Canadian
Society of Biblical Studies. His family remember him best
for his keen mind, his sense of humour and his gentle
spirit. We give thanks for the excellent care and love he
received from The Briton House, Toronto where he and Mary
resided since 2007. A public funeral service will be held at
St. James Anglican Cathedral on Friday 15 May 2009 at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Covenant House,

MALLATRATT: Gloria Marie - Suddenly, in her 73rd year,
Marie passed away at her home in Beaverton. Marie had
recently relocated to the town of Beaverton from Lagoon City
after the passing of her beloved husband of 47 years, Bill.
Marie was active in her new community, working with the ACW
at St. Paul's Anglican church where her plum puddings at the
Christmas Bazaar were a huge hit. She was a long time member
of the Ladies League at Cedarhurst Golf Club, a sport she
came to like late in life but with an enthusiasm that was
unsurpassed and for which she brought home many trophies
over the years. Marie liked nothing better than a home
renovation project where she could rip out walls, cover the
place in plaster dust and completely reinvent the house. She
believed in the absolute equality of women when it was not
fashionable or common to do so. In this vein, she and Bill
raised three very independent and successful daughters.
Marie was the first in her neighbourhood to return to work
once her children were all in school. She had a varied
career as an executive secretary and assistant starting at
her family church of Kingsway United, then on to many years
at Jannock Ltd., and finally as assistant to her husband
Bill for the Ontario RV Association which they ran from
their home in Lagoon City for many years. Marie's great
loves were her children and grandchildren, her golf and her
dogs. She spoiled her three daughters and her three
grandchildren as much as she could. Marie will be sorely
missed by: her daughters Amy (Mikel Miller), Susan (Steve
Duggan), and Lynne; her grandchildren Brenden, Owen-James
and Spencer; her good friends Red and Catherine, Willo and
Paul, Mary Lou, Peony, and Charlotte; the ladies at the ACW
and at Cedarhurst; her nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Memorial visitation will be held at the Mangan Funeral Home
in Beaverton on Friday, February 27 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
Celebration of Marie's Life will be held at St. Paul's
Church in Beaverton on Saturday, February 28 at 2pm. In lieu
of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
the Ontario Humane Society, the Autism Society Canada, or to
a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
