HEINTZMAN: Joan Lorraine (nee Root) – Passed away at the
age of 73, with grace, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Beloved wife of the late Bradford C. Heintzman (2002).
Cherished mother of Craig and Catherine Paisley and dear
grandmother of Julia and Samuel Miller. Loved sister of
Shirley Noble and loving friend of Nancy Mroz. She will also
be greatly missed by her stepchildren, Bradford Heintzman
Jr., Jennifer Heintzman (Peter Cash) and Robb Heintzman
(Marie). Survived by five step-grandchildren and two
step-great-grandchildren. Born in Dunnville, after living in
Toronto as a young woman, Joan spent time in Blackstock and
Scugog Island before settling in Lagoon City in 1991. Joan's
commitment to contributing to her community was demonstrated
by her role as the Executive Director of the Central Seven
Association for the Mentally Retarded in the 1980's, her
leadership with the Lagoon City Newsletter, and her
contribution to the Terry Fox Run in Lagoon City. She loved
spending time on the water, as a child on the Grand River in
Dunnville; later on Georgian Bay on the boat she shared with
her husband Brad; and finally in Lagoon City, enjoying an
end-of-season boat ride with friends and family on
Thanksgiving weekend. Joan was a loving mother and
grandmother, so affectionate with her children and
grandchildren. Always one to have many hugs and kisses to
give; she generously did so with her feline family members
too. Joan was a friend to many. Her positive energy and warm
heart made people want to be close to her and so enjoyed
spending time with her. That so many friends provided her
with support and shared laughter during her illness was a
reflection of this. They are lucky enough to know the
twinkle in Joan's eyes, her smile and sense of humour were
present even in her final days. Joan will also be remembered
for her effortless elegance and her generosity of spirit.
She made peace with the reality of her illness and this calm
acceptance allowed her family and friends to not focus on
what could have been, but rather celebrate her life with
her. It was Joan's request to not have a formal service. Her
family and Nancy are so appreciative of the kind of support
shown be her many friends over the past few weeks and
months. Donations in memory of Joan can be made to
the Oncology Department of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital,
Orillia and would be greatly appreciated by the family.

DIXON: Bernice Louise (nee Burley) 1924 – 2010
On December 5th, Bernice passed away peacefully with her
loving sister Ruth (Markle) at her side. The daughter of
Harold and Muriel (Stark) Burley, Bernice grew up in
Montreal and spent the war years with the Navy serving in
Halifax and Prince Rupert. Subsequently she obtained her
degree in music at McGill University and then moved to
Toronto where she met and married her husband Bill Dixon.
Bernice is survived by her three loving sons,
Lieutenant-Colonel (retired) W. Peter Dixon, Robert B. Dixon
and Dr. Donald B. Dixon. Following a short while in
Vancouver, Bernice and family returned to Toronto where they
lived until the three boys finished their schooling. Then
she and Bill moved to the retirement home they had designed
and built on the shores of Lake Simcoe, very near to where
her parents' cottage had been. Unfortunately, plans for
their much anticipated retirement together went awry with
Bill's untimely passing in 1976. Bernice was always fiercely
supportive of the three boys and, in her own way, of her
extended family of daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great
grandchildren and her nephew and niece. Following Bill's
death, Bernice spearheaded the formation and operation of
Brock Good Neighbours, an organization to support the
independence of seniors in the area. Concurrently she
continued to pursue her passions for playing bridge,
entertaining, reading and cross-country skiing. She will no
doubt be missed by all the neighbourhood dogs and birds who
found her to be such a loving and caring friend although the
same may not be said for the squirrels, who were the bane of
her life by the Lake. Following cremation, a private family
service will be held. Bernice asked that in lieu of flowers,
donations be made in her memory to the donor's choice of
charity.

John's High School in New Brunswick at the age of 14 and
studied at Wycliffe College in Toronto receiving an honours
B.A. in Oriental languages (now Near Eastern Studies). He
received a Masters in Oriental languages from the University
of Toronto where he pursued doctoral studies, played soccer
and was part of the university's track team. According to
Reginald Stackhouse (The Way Forward: A History of Wycliffe
College, Toronto, 1877-2002 [Toronto: University of Toronto
Press, 2002]), Geoffrey Parke-Taylor was considered "someone
too good to lose, a man whose place in the classroom must
quickly change from student desk to professor's lectern."

Professor of Old Testament. Geoffrey pursued his calling as
a parish priest in the 1950s, first as Incumbent at the

College in Vancouver (1959-1964) and Professor of Old
Testament and Hebrew at Huron College, London, Ontario
(1964-1976), serving as Dean of Theology from 1966-1976. He
earned his Doctorate of Divinity from Wycliffe College and
was awarded honorary doctorates from Trinity College and
Huron College. Geoffrey Parke-Taylor published two books:
Yahweh: The Divine Name in The Bible (Wilfrid Laurier
University Press, 1975) and The Formation of the Book of
Jeremiah: Doublets and Recurring Phrases (Society of
Biblical Literature Monograph Series, 2000). The latter
received the R.B.Y. Scott Award in 2001 from the Canadian
Society of Biblical Studies. His family remember him best
for his keen mind, his sense of humour and his gentle
spirit. We give thanks for the excellent care and love he
received from The Briton House, Toronto where he and Mary
resided since 2007. A public funeral service will be held at
St. James Anglican Cathedral on Friday 15 May 2009 at 11 am.

MALLATRATT: Gloria Marie - Suddenly, in her 73rd year,
Marie passed away at her home in Beaverton. Marie had
recently relocated to the town of Beaverton from Lagoon City
after the passing of her beloved husband of 47 years, Bill.
Marie was active in her new community, working with the ACW
at St. Paul's Anglican church where her plum puddings at the
Christmas Bazaar were a huge hit. She was a long time member
of the Ladies League at Cedarhurst Golf Club, a sport she
came to like late in life but with an enthusiasm that was
unsurpassed and for which she brought home many trophies
over the years. Marie liked nothing better than a home
renovation project where she could rip out walls, cover the
place in plaster dust and completely reinvent the house. She
believed in the absolute equality of women when it was not
fashionable or common to do so. In this vein, she and Bill
raised three very independent and successful daughters.
Marie was the first in her neighbourhood to return to work
once her children were all in school. She had a varied
career as an executive secretary and assistant starting at
her family church of Kingsway United, then on to many years
at Jannock Ltd., and finally as assistant to her husband
Bill for the Ontario RV Association which they ran from
their home in Lagoon City for many years. Marie's great
loves were her children and grandchildren, her golf and her
dogs. She spoiled her three daughters and her three
grandchildren as much as she could. Marie will be sorely
missed by: her daughters Amy (Mikel Miller), Susan (Steve
Duggan), and Lynne; her grandchildren Brenden, Owen-James
and Spencer; her good friends Red and Catherine, Willo and
Paul, Mary Lou, Peony, and Charlotte; the ladies at the ACW
and at Cedarhurst; her nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Memorial visitation will be held at the Mangan Funeral Home
in Beaverton on Friday, February 27 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
Celebration of Marie's Life will be held at St. Paul's
Church in Beaverton on Saturday, February 28 at 2pm. In lieu
of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
the Ontario Humane Society, the Autism Society Canada, or to
a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
