Obituary for Mary Ellen Beresford (Soames)

On Sunday, December 1st, 1929, Mary Ellen Soames came into this world in Norton Suffolk England. She was the 3rd child born to Ada Soames (nee Dykes) and Charles Soames. Her older sister Kay, (Katherine) and older brother Digger (Edgar) have pre-deceased her. Her younger sister, Ann (Russell) lives in Oklahoma USA.
Mary grew up in the country and after school went to work in London England minding the children of a horse guard at Buckingham Palace. She also spent a summer minding the children at Crathes Castle in Scotland.
When she was old enough, Mary enlisted in the Royal Navy as a WREN and cooked for the base commander near Eglinton Ireland near Londonderry. It was here that she met Peter Frederick Beresford and after a brief engagement, married at the church in Eglinton. After being posted to Malta, the newlyweds gave birth to Jane (Thompson) followed a year later by Helen (Beresford). Returning to England, Christopher was born, followed a year later by Michael. Following this, the whole family emigrated to Canada settling in Toronto. After working several jobs and moving to different parts of the city, Peter joined the O.P.P. Mary was very busy raising a family and was surprised when Philip was born. Lots of stuff happened! The kids grew up, got married and grandchildren came along! Jane married Paul (d.) and had Roxanne and Lucas. Helen got married and had Justin. Michael married Lori and had Caitlin and Aden. Philip got married and had Bryce. Then great- grandchildren came along... Kilian, Leo, Phineas and of course, one more “in the oven”! Mary, through no fault of her own, became a resident of Lakeview Manor in Beaverton Ontario. On August 3rd, 2022, Mary departed this world on her terms, peacefully with her family close by. She will be missed by her family and the caring loving staff of Beaver River ward. As per Mary's wishes cremation has taken place, a private family interment will be held. If so desired memorial donations to Lakeview Manor Ladies Auxiliary would be greatly appreciated by the family. Online condolences are welcomed at manganfuneralhome.com
