Obituary for Ted deGroot

Theodorus Johannes Cornelius (Ted) de Groot

It is with deep sadness that on December 20, 2023 we had to say goodbye to Theodorus (Ted) de Groot, who passed peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his adoring family.

Ted was born on January 15, 1938 in Boxmeer, Holland, and immigrated to Canada with his parents and eight siblings in 1952. He was the eldest son of the de Groot family, who settled in Beaverton shortly after their arrival in Canada in the 1950’s. He was very proud to be part of this large, extended family and could be found at many gatherings sharing stories, listening to music, dancing, and enjoying the strong community he had built with his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Johannes and Maria; siblings Josephine, Peitrus, and Cornelius; daughter Anita; and an infant son.

He is survived by Anneliese, his loving wife of 60 years; his children Josie (Marc), Theo, Anna Maria (James), Jackie (Greg), and Thea (Bob); his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings John, Agnes, Peter, Maria, Tonie, Mary and Frank; as well as loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the incredible staff at Oak Terrace care home in Orillia, Ontario, for their continuous support and extraordinary care.

A graveside ceremony will be held at St. Joseph’s cemetery (Durham Rd 15, Beaverton, Ontario) at noon on Saturday, May 11, 2024, followed by a celebration of life and reception at the Brechin Legion (2146 Concession Rd 4, Brechin, Ontario) from 1pm to 4pm.

If desired, memorial contributions can be made in Ted’s name to your local food bank.

A poem by Alethea (Grand daughter)
The price of love is loss
If you’re lucky enough to feel the pain of grief washing over you like waves
A storm in the pit of your stomach, a lightening strike to the chest
Then how blessed are you to have loved someone so deeply
