Aunty Thelly

My younger self was captivated by Aunty Thelma. She seemed as exotic as the brightly feathered budgie bird in her living room. The knowledge that she was raised in India increased my interest. Aunty Thelma was a study in contrasts. From her posh accent and straight posture to tabloid magazines stuffed under her couch (found by my curious niece’s fingers) to her job as a store detective Thelly was fascinating.

Aunty Thelma loved clothes and was always well attired. She enjoyed a good bargain. “When you get tired of those shoes remember your Aunty Thelly dear” she would say to me as she admired my sandals.

I spent many family dinners at Aunty Thelma’s house. I remember Thelly’s Christmas tree, with the rotating coloured floor light shimmering in the silver tree.

Thelma was very cheerful and interested in what was happening. I would even suggest that Thelly liked a bit of gossip. In later years she enjoyed hearing about my family via my annual letter and was keen to know who was romancing whom.

Aunty Thelly loved coming to my mother’s house for a meal, especially if curry was on the menu. She appreciated other’s cooking although it was not her forte.

Thelma enjoyed the heat and found the Canadian winter landscape harsh. She loved to dance and did so well into her later years.

I can picture her now dancing in her new shoes.

My condolences to Terry, Ardith, Alice and family.
