Own Language

I love the way Tom spoke. "He had his own language," Cindy remarked, when I mentioned he always nicknamed people, places, and things. Yes! He had many sayings he repeated often so they stuck in my head. A lot of them, he told me, came from his father, or from his favourite pastime, movies. When I'd do something nice for him, he'd say, "I'm feelin' the love." He was very fastidious with himself and his home, which was part of the, "Tom needs calm," saying. Always very honourable in all ways, he insisted on doing more than his share and paying his half even though he was always "strapped for cash." It's "The Code," he'd say. Also always tinkering, he'd use the Thomas Edison quote, "I haven't failed, I've gotten one step closer by eliminating this." When we first met, I told him I thought he had a slight accent. He said that when Becky went to "the city" they told her she had a bit of a brogue, as well. I loved it when he'd randomly go full Irish accent with sayings like, "that'll do lassy," or, "it's the Irish way...full attack, no evade, put your head down and plow through," or "that was a great story and you told it well." His many sayings and the way he said them made me smile, laugh, or take note so much that over the years I wrote them down. I'm sure you'll recognize some of these: How ya doin' there. Let it flow. Stay in the now. Better to have it and not need it. Easier to stay warm than to get warm. It's not whether or not its doable, it's whether you want it bad enough to make it happen. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. That's all I got to say about that. On the back side. (at the end of something) In scrounge mode. I'm not much for that. That's a "desperation" item. (something he purchased accidently like flavoured coffee or crappy soap) The less said program. He needs a little education. (if someone ticked him off) I could feel the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Going full throttle. Nicely done. (after funny or witty remark) Good share. I'm enhancing my calm. Putting out the salmon. (luring in) Get it all goin' on. (drinks, movie, dessert, etc.) Oh, happy day! (dancing and snapping fingers) I see you. It's the little things. Know what I'm sayin'? That's wild eh? Cuz ya gotta remember..." Any thoughts on that? What would be your thoughts on that? What's that all about? How's that workin' for ya? Good talk. Or Glad we had this talk? Chew on that.
